Would there be a way to get back the money I paid for the IRS for taxes?

I am working in the Military and I have claimed my niece on my taxes since 2005. During the year 2010, the IRS took USD 3,000 that they said I owed in back taxes as I was not qualified for the earned income credit in 2005. They stated that they were trying to contact me, during the time that I was deployed. I do not have copies of my 2005 or 2006 tax returns. As an enlisted soldier, I do not make much as it is and this is a huge amount of money. Would there be a way to take the money that I have paid them?

If you owed the IRS taxes, then you owe them the money. If you disagree with the IRS, then you should file a claim for refund. You cannot arbitrarily determine that they are wrong with regard to your qualifying for the earned income credit, and, therefore, not pay taxes in the future.
